If you search for the word "antivirus" on major search engines like Google, Yahoo, or MSN there is a possibility you will end up with "6StarReview.com" or "StarReviews.com" with a link name like "Top 10 Antivirus for 2008" as one of top sponsored ads. The Star Reviews is basically a Web-only review site that covers everything from blog services to online banking. Perhaps the site is a bit heavy on affiliate links, but nothing out of the ordinary. No pop-ups. No browser exploits. All in all, it looks legit

Microsoft this week issued a study that examines the malicious software threat to Windows computers ... a report clearly written from the software giant's vantage point. While the report includes some interesting stats about which malware samples were most prevalent on customer machines last year, the most meaningful section of the report focuses on a new development that may force Microsoft to redefine its approach to security. Microsoft said the number of security bulletins it...Please click on the title

Many of us have experienced such tricks, including fake errors stating that a specific file could not be found or that the application failed to load properly. Today we will look at one of these seemingly innocent files and find that its doing much more than just showing you an "interesting" video.

Digital real estate leased to one of the Internet's oldest landholders appears to have been quietly seized by e-mail marketers closely associated with an individual once tagged by anti-spam groups as the world's most notorious spammers. What's remarkable about this case study is that it pits a vocal spammer against the American Registry for Internet Numbers, which has yet to take action. ARIN is one of five regional Internet registries worldwide that is responsible for...Please click on the title to contin

Well, its that time of year again and as to be expected, malicious code authors are using the occasion to try to lure unsuspecting folks (are there still any around?) into installing their wares. Two examples of spammed emails we have seen so far have these subject lines: God bless America, Fabulous Independence Day firework

As expected, the 2.0 version of iPhone released today includes a number of security updates, patching more than a dozen holes in the slimmed-down OS X operating system that powers the devices. That means for those who already own Apple's mobile device, it's time to update. As detailed in a column last week, a number of these patches are updates that Apple shipped earlier this year for Safari and/or the version of OS X designed...Please click on the title to continue reading this entry.

Here in the Labs, we've recently discovered a new spam worm spreading. It is usually sent with spam that tries to deceive users into clicking a malicious URL contained in the message. Once clicked, the URL redirects users to malicious Web sites that result in an ActiveX Object error. The intention of this error is to manipulate users to download files infected with a virus.

Over the past week, a number of the Internet's largest data carriers have ceased providing online connectivity to Atrivo (a.k.a. "Intercage"), an ISP that security experts say is home to a huge number of scammers and spammers. This week, I'm turning the spotlight on EstDomains Inc., Atrivo's most important customer and the single biggest reason so many experts have condemned Atrivo. According to RegistrarStats.com, EstDomains is the 49th largest domain name registrar, with more than...Please click on the t
