New Delhi (PTI): With cyber crime emerging as a new area of challenge,

Delhi Police on Tuesday launched an exercise to train its officers on

ways to detect frauds and crack cases involving internet.

A hundred officers of the force will be trained in the next few months

on hardware, software and computer networking besides specialised

training on cyber crime and computer forensics.

The first batch of 50 officers, which include five Assistant

Commissioners of Police (ACPs), 15 Inspectors and 30 Sub Inspectors,

will be given training for one-and-a-half months on e-mail tracking,

digital fraud, credit card fraud and other e-mail frauds.

This is the second such course being conducted by Delhi Police, the

first being a one-month course on the finer points of law during which

prominent criminal lawyers like Ram Jethmalani and K T S Tulsi

interacted with police officers.

Inaugurating the training programme at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha

University here, Special Commissioner of Police (Administration) Neeraj

Kumar said it has become crucial for forces to be well equipped to

investigate and combat crimes committed in the cyber space.

Criminals are now using Information Technology in their activities and

for police, it is very important to be up-to-date with technology, he

said adding the training programme would make officers better equipped

to handle such illegal activities on the internet.

Cyber crime cases have gone up by 200 per cent in the national capital

last year compared to 2006. Among these, the increase in cases related

to credit card fraud has registered a 500 per cent increase.
