Hello and welcome to this month’s blog on the Microsoft patch releases. This month, Microsoft will release four bulletins that cover a total of 12 vulnerabilities.



Of those, 11 are rated ‘critical’ and one is rated ‘important’. Two of the critical issues affect Office Web Components and have the potential to be the worst of the bunch. Office Web Components are installed as part of multiple applications. The vulnerabilities affecting them can be triggered by simply visiting a web page with some attacker-controlled content. Seven of the critical issues affect Microsoft Excel and require a victim to open a malicious file to trigger the vulnerability. The remaining issues affect Outlook and Office.

1. MS08-017 Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Web Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (933103)





CVE-2006-4695 (BID 28135) Microsoft Office Web Components ActiveX Control URL Parsing Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS Rating: Critical / Symantec Urgency Rating: 7.1/10)



A client-side code-execution vulnerability affects Office Web Components due to the way it manages memory resources when parsing a URL. An attacker must entice a victim into visiting a Web page with attacker-controlled content, or into following a malicious URI, to exploit this issue. A successful attack will result in the execution of arbitrary attacker-supplied code in the context of the currently logged-in user.

CVE-2007-1201 (BID 28136) Microsoft Office Web Components DataSource Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS Rating: Critical / Symantec Urgency Rating: 7.1/10)



A client-side code-execution vulnerability affects Office Web Components during URL parsing. An attacker must entice a victim into visiting a Web page with attacker-controlled content, or into following a malicious URI, to exploit this issue. A successful attack will result in the execution of arbitrary attacker-supplied code in the context of the currently logged-in user.

2. MS08-015 Vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook Could Allow Remote Code Execution (949031)



CVE-2008-0110 (BID 28147) Microsoft Outlook Mailto URI Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS Rating: Critical / Symantec Urgency Rating: 7.1/10)



A remote-code execution vulnerability affects Outlook when handling “mailto” URIs passed to it from the browser. An attacker must trick a victim into viewing a malicious page, or into following a malicious URI to exploit this issue. A successful exploit will result in the execution of attacker-supplied code in the context of the currently logged-in user.

3. MS08-014 Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (949029)

An attacker must trick a victim into opening a malicious file to exploit this issue. An attacker must trick a victim into opening a malicious file to exploit this issue. CVE-2008-0081 (BID 27305) Microsoft Excel Header Parsing Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS Rating: Critical / Symantec Urgency Rating: 8.5/10)



This is a previously disclosed remote code execution vulnerability first documented on Jan 15, 2008. It affects Excel when handling macros in malicious files. An attacker must trick a victim into opening a malicious file to exploit this issue. A successful attack will result in the execution of arbitrary attacker-supplied code in the context of the currently logged-in user.

4. MS08-016 Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (949030)



CVE-2007-1747/CVE-2008-0113 (BID 23826) Microsoft Office Malformed Drawing Object Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS Rating: Important / Symantec Urgency Rating: 7.1/10)



This is an update to BID 23826 adding Excel Viewer as vulnerable. This is a remote code execution vulnerability when handling specially crafted Excel files. An attacker must trick a victim into opening a malicious file to exploit this issue. A successful attack will result in the execution of arbitrary attacker-supplied code in the context of the currently logged-in user.



Affects: Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003 and Microsoft Office Excel Viewer SP3



CVE-2008-0118 (BID 28146) Microsoft Office File Handling Memory Corruption Vulnerability (MS Rating: Critical / Symantec Urgency Rating: 7.1/10)



A client-side remote code execution vulnerability affects Office when processing malformed Office files. An attacker must trick a victim into opening a malicious file to exploit this issue.
